Using EXCEL of Graph Beer’s Law Data
Log on to the computer using
your student # and you will be able to save your work.
1.
Click “Start,”
then “Program,” then Microsoft “EXCEL.”
2.
Enter your wave
length data into column A. (x axis)
3.
Enter your
Absorbance data into column B. (y axis)
4.
Highlight
columns A and B.
5.
Click on “Chart
Wizard,” (button on tool bar that looks like a bar graph.)
i.
Click “Chart
type: xy scatter”
ii.
For “Chart
subtype,” choose the 3rd down on the left. This should show the caption: “scatter with data points connected by
lines.”
6.
Click “Series
in: columns.” Click “next.”
7.
Enter Chart
Title, and label the axes.
8.
Choose “Place
chart: As New Sheet.” Click: “Finish.”
9.
Click “Print”
from the tool bar.

Click back onto
sheet 1.
2.
Enter your
Cobalt (II) nitrate concentration in column D.
3.
Enter your
Absorbance values into column E.
4.
Highlight
columns D and E.
5.
Click on “Chart
Wizard,” (button on tool bar that looks like a bar graph.)
i.
Click “Chart
type: XY Scatter”
ii.
For “Chart
subtype,” choose the 1st one with no lines
6.
Click “Series
in: columns.” Click “next.”
7.
Enter Chart
Title, and label the axes.
8.
Choose “Place
chart: As New Sheet.” Click: “Finish.”
9.
From the Menu
bar, Click “Chart: Add Trendline;”
“Type: Linear”
i.
While still in
the “Add Trendline” screen, click the “Options” tab on top. Choose “Display equation on chart” OK
10. Click the “Print” icon to print the graph.

Click “File”
From the Menu bar.
2.
To save on a
disk: put the disk into the disk drive, choose “Save in: 3 ½ Floppy (A:) File name: “Beers
Law”
3.
To save on the
system (if you logged on with your id#) “Save in: H:” “file name: Beers Law.
4.
Exit from Excel,
Hit “Start” button and log off.
